Decorative History

The decorative mace lay behind glass
It was used ceremonially
In ages long past

Before that it saw combat
And slayed a tyrant
Restructuring society with a blow

In ceremony the weapon
Reminded any monarchists
How subjugators are mortal

But archivists cleaned the dried blood
To preserve the weapon
And its legend faded

Its purpose remains
Relevant as ever today
But few remember

First they forgot
The weapon’s story
Then they were made to forget

It lives under thick glass
With museum guards beside
The velvet ropes

And the plaque
Beside the weapon reads
“Mace of Unknown Origin and Age”
